Competitive Football Teams at We Make Footballers Gwent: A Development Pathway for Young Players in Brynmawr

At We Make Footballers Brynmawr, our aim is simple: to help every child become a more confident, skilful and intelligent footballer.

For some players, weekly coaching sessions are exactly what they need. For others, there comes a point where they are ready for an additional challenge.

That is where our competitive We Make Footballers Gwent teams come in.

More Than Just Weekly Football Coaching

Our weekly Brynmawr sessions are designed to help children develop their technical ability in a fun, positive and supportive environment.

Players work on key areas of the game including:

  • Ball mastery

  • Dribbling and 1v1 situations

  • Passing and receiving

  • Finishing

  • Decision-making

  • Confidence on the ball

For players who want more football and are ready to test themselves in a competitive environment, our WMF Gwent teams provide an additional development opportunity.

What Are the We Make Footballers Gwent Competitive Teams?

Our competitive teams give young players the opportunity to train regularly and play matches against strong opposition.

The focus remains firmly on player development.

We want our players to become comfortable on the ball, brave in possession and confident enough to express themselves during matches. Results are part of competitive football, but they are not the only measure of success.

We look at the bigger picture.

Is the player improving?

Are they becoming more confident?

Are they making better decisions?

Are they developing technically and tactically?

That is what matters most to us.

A Clearer Pathway for Players in Brynmawr

One of the biggest benefits of being part of We Make Footballers is the wider pathway available to players across Gwent.

Children can begin by attending our weekly coaching sessions in Brynmawr before potentially progressing into additional opportunities within our wider programme.

Our competitive teams provide another environment for players who want to train more frequently, play regular fixtures and challenge themselves against strong opposition.

Importantly, We Make Footballers is a development centre rather than a grassroots football club. Players can therefore continue playing for their grassroots team while also benefiting from additional coaching and competitive opportunities with us.

Playing Against Strong Opposition

Our teams are designed to give players experiences that challenge them.

By playing against strong opposition, young footballers are encouraged to:

  • Make quicker decisions

  • Become more comfortable under pressure

  • Improve their understanding of the game

  • Develop resilience

  • Express themselves in competitive situations

These experiences can play an important part in a young player's development.

Creating Opportunities for Talented Players

Across We Make Footballers Gwent, we are incredibly proud to have already helped more than 30 players progress into FAW academy and professional academy environments.

That does not mean every child who joins us has to become an academy footballer.

Our goal is to help every player maximise their own potential.

For some, that may mean becoming more confident and enjoying football more.

For others, it may mean progressing into one of our competitive teams.

And for a small number of players, it may eventually lead to opportunities within the academy system.

Whatever the destination, we want to provide a positive and challenging environment that helps every player move forward.

Development Comes First

Youth football should be about more than simply winning matches.

Our competitive teams are built around the same philosophy as our weekly coaching sessions: helping children become better footballers while continuing to enjoy the game.

We want players who are:

Confident. Technical. Brave. Competitive. Willing to learn.

By combining high-quality coaching with regular competitive football, we aim to create an environment where young players can continue to develop and challenge themselves.
